Thousands of litres of water delivered; next delivery on January 30

Following the huge success of the collection -- about 19 000 litres of water and 42 bales of hay -- undertaken mostly by Boksburg residents, for drought-stricken areas, the next delivery date has been set for January 30.

A group of concerned Boksburg community members recently came together in an effort to relieve the water crisis that has hit certain parts of South Africa, including towns like Aliwal North, Senekal and Colesberg.

According to Janine Boshoff, the first delivery, made possible by RGM Cranes, was a huge success, with a lot of help and donations from the public.

“We are aware of other groups on Facebook helping farmers in need, but we know of some farmers who will lose everything if they are not helped as soon as possible,” she said.

“That is why we decided to deliver feed with the water by the end of the month. We have already identified struggling farmers who need our help.

“We are not interfering or competing with any other group, just trying to help people in need in the areas to which we deliver.”

The Good Samaritans have people from all over involved in the project.

Boshoff and Lydia Venter started collecting water in Impala Park and Witkoppie Ridge before they met Mariska Bothma through the Water Shortage Group on Facebook.

“We initially thought we could fill up one truck as a once-off delivery, but the Impala Park and Witkoppie Ridge community decided to continue this effort,” said Boshoff.

“We also have various communities jumping on board, while schools and a group of bikers are taking hands to assist us.

“We invite anyone to accompany the truck on January 30, when it delivers. Believe me, it is an amazing and eye-opening experience.”

To generate more funds to continue buying feed and water, raffle tickets at R50 each are being sold, with a base set, worth R6 000, up for grabs.

The draw for the prize will be done on Monday, February 8.

“There are also already plans for possibly two more trucks to be sent after January 30, so all proceeds from the raffle sale will be much appreciated,” said Boshoff.

The group needs the following urgently:

* more people willing to be drop-off points;

* people who will collect from others who don’t have transport;

* containers for people offering their borehole water. They don’t have big enough containers;

* bakkies and transport to help the group to get the water and feed to Impala Park by January 29;

* people to help load the truck;

* people to help offload the truck in the delivery town, on January 30.
