Join Boksburg residents in helping ‘Boere in Nood’ fight water crisis

As the water crisis worsens in certain parts of South Africa, including towns like Aliwal North, Senekal and Colesberg, Boksburg residents are lending support to the farmers in need in those areas.

Residents in the affected areas were recently reported to be begging for drinking water from holidaymakers and most of them have been without drinking water for more than six days.

Part of the problem in some areas has been parts of the Orange River having stopped flowing two weeks ago.

Bardene resident Mariska Bothma saw the plea of residents from affected areas on a Facebook pages called Boere in Nood/ Boere in Need and Water Shortage South Africa.

“It touched me and I thought to myself, how can I help?” said Mariska.

Mariska then posted a message on a local crime WhatsApp group requesting people to donate water.

“The response is amazing – we put the message out on Sunday night and by late on Monday, we had already collected 1 216 litres.”

She said she is working closely with Impala Park resident Janine Boshoff.

People can donate water in any container sizes, starting from two litre bottles upwards. The water should clearly be marked to indicate if it’s tap water, grey water or bottled water.

“Those people in provinces such as in the Free State have absolutely no drinking water,” she said.

Mariska said she is just doing her deeds to save the country.

Those willing to donate water can visit the Facebook page Water Shortage South Africa and will be directed where to donate water in Bardene.

Mariska is also in the process of arranging a drop-off point and will communicate the information as soon as the details have been finalised.

Other concerned residents have volunteered to transport the water to the affected areas, with the first load expected to be delivered today.

Mariska appealed to Boksburg residents to help in any way, whether by donating water or making deliveries.
