Local SPCA outreach team assists poor communities with their pets

The Boksburg SPCA outreach team goes out into the informal settlements and townships around Boksburg daily, mainly to collect unwanted or injured animals and educate pet owners on how to look after their animals.

Every weekday the team spends a few hours in the different communities, assisting with whatever need arises.

The Advertiser had the opportunity to spend a few hours with the outreach team at the Vosloorus Police Station, on Wednesday, December 9.

The team, consisting of Solly Tau and Doctor Mphela, is already well known in the area, and pet owners, with their pets, were already awaiting their arrival at the police station, during the morning.

“We bring our dogs here to make them happy and to get their skins cleaned of ticks and fleas,” said brothers Hendry and Percy Mbatha.

According to Mphela, the communities they visit are well aware of this campaign, with the turnout always being good.

“Since June, this year, the number of people has grown the need for this campaign,” said Boksburg SPCA manager,Maggie Mudd.

Other services the outreach team offers are the dipping of dogs and the removal of stitches after sterilisation.

Educational pamphlets, T-shirts and pet food are also handed out.

Where possible, the SPCA will assist with medical treatment and sterilisation.

Tau told the Advertiser that his main objective is to communicate the importance of sterilising pets.

“The pet owners can fill in the forms here, then the SPCA will book the sterilisation of the animals at a much cheaper rate for the owner,” he said.

Anyone willing to contribute to the Boksburg SPCA outreach team by sponsoring a sterilisation should contact the society on 011 916 5906/7.
