Eye-for-an-eye justice meted out against murder suspect

An angry mob killed a 20-year-old murder suspect as apparent punishment in Joe Slovo Informal Settlement, Reiger Park, on Saturday afternoon, December 12.

The mob justice victim was identified as Nzazo Alfa Mfenqa.

Mfenqa allegedly fatally stabbed a resident of the area, 30-year-old Zukile Goodman, before the eye-for-an-eye justice was carried out against him.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, Goodman died after he was stabbed once in the chest apparently by Mfenqa, following an argument at a tavern.

Furious residents of the informal settlement reportedly grabbed Mfenqa and lynched him.

Mfenqa was reportedly stabbed multiple times while being beaten and pelted with stones by the angry mob.

The police condemned the attack on Mfenqa, describing it as an “unspeakably cruel and gruesome retribution punishment”.

Phathela warned residents against taking law into their own hands.

“Two wrongs do not make a right,” said Phathela.

He urged residents to report criminals to the police as they are the ones responsible for law and order.

“If you grab a suspected murderer off the street and kill him, you are also a murderer in your own right,” said Phathela.

Police are now seeking witnesses to both incidents.

Witnesses to either crime are asked to contact the investigation officer Det W/O Bradley Jacobs on 011 916 7000. @FanieFLK
