Gunshot wound claims life of Brogan Mahony

Brogan Mahony, who survived a vicious attack in Boksburg on his 26th birthday, died from a gunshot wound to his face, on Tuesday, December 8.

Mahony was previously brutally attacked and left unconscious on Commissioner Street, Boksburg, next to Absa, on December 14, 2013.

He survived the ordeal, even though he was left brain damaged.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Benoni City Times (BCT) reported that Mahony died from a gunshot wound.

He was certified dead inside a vehicle parked outside Life The Glynnwood Hospital.

Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen, acting station commander of the Benoni SAPS, told the BCT that the deceased allegedly shot himself at his parents’ home, in Goedeburg, at around 3pm.

Van Nieuwenhuizen is said to have told the BCT that the deceased was, according to a friend, “tired of life”.

The friend was reportedly present at the house when a shot went off and he is alleged to have rushed the victim to hospital, before he succumbed to his gunshot wounds outside the medical facility.

Although the deceased’s mother, Xavier Mahony, confirmed that her son died from a gunshot wound, she told this publication that she did not know what the circumstances were surrounding her son’s death.

The friend has since been arrested on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Twenty-six year old Brogan Mahony may never walk or talk again following a brutal beating that took place on his birthday.
Brogan Mahony, who was a victim of assault in 2013, has died from a gunshot wound.

It appears the friend had gone home before the incident to collect a pistol from his father’s safe and took it back to Mahony’s house.

The police told the BCT that it is unclear whether the suspect’s intention was to aid his friend in taking his own life, but police are investigating the incident.

During the 2013 assault, Brogan was rushed to Life The Glynnwood Hospital, in Benoni, with severe head injuries, as a result of allegedly being beaten on the head with a brick, which was found at the scene.

Neurosurgeon Dr Enrico Branca, who was the doctor in the Neuro Ward where Brogan was being treated, confirmed at the time that Brogan was brain damaged.

He was later transferred to Midstream Medical Centre, in Midrand, for further treatment, before being discharged.
