Stop the killing of police officers- Popcru

In a bid to address the escalating slaying of police officers, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), in the Ekurhuleni East region, mounted a protest action on Tuesday, December 8.

Popcru members, along with members of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) and the CPF, gathered outside the Boksburg Police Station to demonstrate against the killings.

The union’s calls for an end to the murders of women and men in blue saw off-duty police officers taking part in the peaceful demonstration.

Members of Popcru, Sanco and the CPF, are expected to stage another demonstration on December 10, outside the Vosloorus Police Station.

According to W/O Welcome Makeleni, the aim is to encourage police management and community members to work together in addressing the killings of police officers.

“Members of the public need to be mobilised to help authorities fight crime, including the killings of police officers – because these criminals are not from another planet, they live in our communities,” said Makeleni.

He added that the number of police officers who have been killed so far this year alone, has reached 60.

“Most of the killings occurred when police were responding to the needs of the public,” he said.

“The legitimate authority of the state has been seriously undermined by these continued killings of members of the police service.”

The latest attack on police officers took place over the weekend, when three police officers were shot while attending to a call-out in Thokoza.

According to Makeleni, the three police officers are still fighting for their lives in hospital. -@FanieFLK
