Boksburg court sends dangerous trio to an effective 127 years in jail

The Boksburg Magistrates Court recently handed down hefty sentences to the three accused who have been terrorising the community.

Sbusiso Kekasha (29), Themba Ndlovu (29) and Thokozani Ndlebe (27), all from Vosloorus, were handed a combined 127 years in prison for a string of charges, including robbery and attempted murder.

The trio went on a violent rampage on April 25, 2013, resulting in each of them facing a total of eight charges.

They pleaded not guilty to all the charges on April 14.

They faced the following charges:

Count 1: Intentionally and unlawfully assaulting Nicolus Chiloane and, with force, using a firearm, robbing him of his firearm, his car and wallet containing R1 400.

Count 2: Attempted murder, after they unlawfully and intentionally attempted to kill Chiloane by shooting at him with a firearm.

Count 3: Robbery with aggravating circumstances, after they assaulted Mummy-Girl Khoza and Paulina Basedi and, with force, took a Toyota Avanza from the two.

Count 4: Attempted murder, after they unlawfully and intentionally attempted to kill Lebogang Letaka by shooting at him with a firearm.

Count 5: Attempted murder, after they attempted to kill Zongesile Mahlatsi by shooting at him with a firearm.

Charge 6: Malicious damage to property, after they unlawfully and intentionally damaged a state vehicle, which is the property of the South African Police.

Count 7: Possession of a firearm, after they were found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol.

Count 8: Possession of 17 live rounds for a 9mm pistol.

Kekasha was sentenced to 15 years on count 1, five years on count 2, 15 years on count 3, five years on count 4, five years on count 5, one year on count 6, 25 years on count 7 and five years on count 8.

The court ordered that the sentences on counts 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and half of 3 run concurrently with the sentence on count 7. He will serve an effective 47 years.

Ndlovu was sentenced to 20 years on count 1, five years on count 2, 20 years on count 3, five years on count 4, five years on count 5, one year on count 6, 20 years on count 7 and five years on count 8.

The court ordered that the sentences on counts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 run concurrently with the sentence on count 7. He will serve an effective 40 years.

Ndlebe was sentenced to 15 years on count 1, seven years on count 2, 15 years on count 3, seven years on count 4, seven years on count 5, one year on count 6, 20 years on count 7 and five years on count 5.

The court ordered that the sentences on counts 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and five years of count 1 and 3 run concurrently with count 7. He will serve an effective 40 years in jail.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided and prosecutor Nkosazana Tyeku represented the state.
