Ekurhuleni a disaster after storm wrecks havoc at over 3000 homes

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele has signed a declaration of disaster following severe storms which passed through parts of the metropolis last week.

Now the focus for Disaster and Emergency personnel will shift from providing immediate temporary relief to a reconstruction phase which will see permanent repairs being implemented to homes.

“Over the past week, task team members have identified 3 386 households whose roof tops were blown off, windows and structures damaged by hail and strong winds.

“Temporary repairs to affected households in Etwatwa and Southern parts of Ekurhuleni have been completed,” said Ekurhuleni mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini said the official declaration of disaster will assist in unlocking resources to enable the implementation of long-term assistance to bring permanent relief to the affected residents.
