Preventing crime through awareness

Residents of Boksburg and surrounding cities were urged to cooperate with the police during a massive crime awareness campaign on Saturday, November 7.

About 200 participants riding on the back of motorcycles, along with about a 100 others driving in a fleet of police and CPF vehicles gathered at Carnival City before they took the streets that fall within the Brakpan Cluster.

The motorcade travelled through the streets of Brakpan, Tsakane and Boksburg – distributing thousands of crime-awareness leaflets to bystanders.

The day-long campaign ended at Annemarie’s Pub & Grill, in Anderbolt, Boksburg, where the crowd of about 300 people, consisting of SAPS, EMPD, CPF, Youth Desk members, four different local security companies, as well as bikers gathered to show support against crime.

The crime-awareness campaign organised by the Brakpan CPF Cluster, in conjunction with the Brakpan SAPS Cluster, was aimed at reducing acts of drug dealing, violence, and muggings, killing of police officers, substance abuse, house robberies, murders and other crimes.

The event also served as an opportunity to encourage residents to join the CPFs.

Acting Brakpan cluster commander Brig Johannes Manyathela, Gauteng CPF chairperson Andy Mashaile and Brakpan CPF Cluster chairperson Herman Heunis were in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the Brakpan SAPS cluster, Manyathela said his organisation supports this initiative because it reminds everyone that they need to continually support the police in the fight against crime.

“It encourages residents to not tolerate criminal activity in their neighbourhoods – but to work with their local police to eradicate it,” said Brig Manyathela.

He said everyone has a role to play in ensuring that our communities are safe.

Heunis labelled the event a success and said it’s important for the public to be aware of the crime situation in their communities.

“We are working hard to get crime reduction messages out to local communities and to raise awareness of crime in the local area,” he said.

“We hope that making people aware that they need to stand against crime will result in a reduction in opportunities for criminals.

“Although I expected the attendance to be at least double the number of people who came to support us, we are grateful to everyone who joined in the initiative.” -@FanieFLK.
