Open data day for young digital enthusiasts

The Ekurhuleni Metro recently hosted an Open Data Day, when young digital enthusiasts from all walks of life gathered at the Civic Centre.

They brainstormed concepts such as developing applications and creating visualisations, while a public analysis was also conducted to help the community to achieve service goals.

The session was aimed at giving technologically-minded citizens an opportunity to utilise the public data available to create applications that will be useful to the community at large.

“Sessions like these are an educational platform for the community to have knowledge on IBM and Microsoft. We have also made Bluemix and Azure applications available for participants to use,” said application manager Vuyani Zwane.

The participants also had the opportunity to interact with Microsoft and IBM professionals, who provided high-level training on their tools and platforms for building mobile solution.

Keitumetsi Bokaba, a final year computer student from Pretoria, said: “I am happy I came because I gained so much knowledge and insight.”

“The goal of the session was to drive the development of citizen-centric solutions that maximise data initiatives, increase citizen engagement and the city’s efficiency,” said Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
