Water keeps pumping out of burst pipe; specialised clamp required

A specialised clamp is needed to fix a burst water pipe at the ERPM Golf Course.

This is according to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, who said repairs at the golf course have been delayed due to the size of the pipeline.

He said the manufacturer of the pipe has been engaged to prepare such a clamp.

The leak was first reported a few weeks ago by a resident of Boksburg, Matthew Baxter, who is concerned that in the wake of SA’s drought, thousands of litres of waters are being wasted on a daily basis, while reaction is slow to fix the leak.

“This leak is extremely large, possibly in excess of 50kl an hour. I don’t think I would be able to wrap my arms around this pipe,” he said.

Baxter first reported the leak to the metro and then to Rand Water in the hope that it could be repaired quickly, considering the country’s reservoirs are running low.

“Rand Water did react immediately to my complaint on October 30, but upon inspection said it is a metro pipe.

“I know metro workers did come out on November 3 to attend to the problem, but by today (November 10) the leak has deteriorated.

“Certain suburbs are experiencing water shortages, even severe restrictions, yet here we sit with a leak that has been pumping out water for weeks now. This is not acceptable.”

Gadebe said the repairs will be done soon.
