Thousands of SAPS officers to be promoted

Police commissioner Riah Phiyega has announced this week that mass promotions within the SA Police Service will take place.

About 7 000 constables and sergeants would be promoted this financial year, while another 7 000 in the same ranks would be promoted in the next financial year.

The promotions follows the release of the national crime statistics, which shows that crime remains out of control with 49 people killed daily in South Africa.

Reportedly the SAPS has made available R150m for the grade progression of 3 761 constables to sergeants and 3 614 sergeants to warrant officers.

This amount will then increase as the other officers are also promoted.

Phiyega, however, denied the promotions were aimed at rectifying demoralisation in the police force.

There is about 200 000 members serving in the South African Police Service.
