Pedestrian dies after being dragged 50m by taxi

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a taxi on Rondebult Road between Comet (former mine houses) and Plantation on Wednesday morning, September 30.

Police officers on the scene told the Advertiser that the 31-year-old Malawian Daniel Selenje was knocked down next to the Pretoria Road turn-off at around 5.30am.

The northbound taxi hit and dragged Selenje for about 50m before he landed on the painted island between Rondebult and Pretoria roads.

The taxi came to a stop about a 100m from where the man was knocked down.

Paramedics declared Selenje dead on the scene.

The man, a security guard, was on his way to work when he was killed.

The 26-year-old driver of the taxi escaped the accident unharmed. He was arrested and charged with culpable homicide.

Investigators believe that speeding is a factor in this crash.

It is still unclear if the man was walking on the painted island or trying to cross the road when he was hit.

The victim was shortly afterwards identified by his wife.

Onlookers who gathered around the scene told the Advertiser that the portion of the road, near the Pretoria Road turn-off is a dangerous one because a lack of a pedestrian crossing. – @FanieFLK
