Endless water issues in Ward 22

The water problems in Boksburg's Ward 22 have escalated to a critical level, where drastic measures will have to be taken by the Ekurhuleni Metro to permanently address this issue.

This is according to Benno Robinson, Ward 22 councillor.

“Thus far the metro has failed dismally in their responsibility to ensure infrastructure in Boksburg is maintained and, in Ward 22, things have gone from bad to worse,” said Robinson.

He pointed out the following issues that need urgent attention:

q The industries and businesses in Anderbolt, Dunswart and Boksburg North have been effected by water shortages and infrastructure breakdowns.

q Sewage running down the roads in Ward 22 and into storm water systems is a common phenomenon and takes months to rectify.

q The sewage leaks in Norma Road and Paul Smit have been left unattended for the past year.

“It is the taxpayer who is footing the bill for the R357-million worth of water that is going lost in the Ekurhuleni Metro yearly,” Robinson said.

“As the DA councillor for Ward 22, I am inundated on a daily basis with complaints from residents and businesses about leaking water and sewerage pipes, broken storm water drains and faulty water meters in the area.

“Complaints logged with the Ekurhuleni Metro Call Centre and the Water Department are seldom resolved by the municipality.

“The result is that leaks and broken infrastructure take months to be repaired.

“This can be seen in Anderbolt, where sewerage continues to flow down the road, despite the issue having being reported over a year ago.

“Complaints about water leaks in Ravenswood have also been logged with the municipality six times over the past six months, with no action being taken to date.

“This means that the municipality is failing to fulfil the promise made to council that it will fix leaks and broken infrastructure within 48 hours after the matter is reported.

“Mayor Gungubele has also failed to fulfil his promise of resolving all water leakages reported by councillors to his office within a month. In the previous council meeting he promised all water leaks would be repaired within a month. In the next meeting he refused to give feedback.

“I will, therefore, continue to drive this issue by meeting with municipal officials, submitting questions and motions to council and distributing a petition for residents to sign, which I will submit to council.

“The community of Ward 22 deserves better and I will not let this matter rest until the metro starts fulfilling its responsibilities.”
