Father arrested as child dies from poisoned food

A child (11) died after he unknowingly ate poisoned food, allegedly meant to kill his mother, in the Angelo informal settlement, on Sunday, September 13.

Investigators suspect that the father of the child had a hand in the death of the child.

It is believed that the food was poisoned by the father, who allegedly intended to kill the woman, who he accused of being an errant mother.

It is alleged that the mother spends most of her time drinking alcohol at taverns, neglecting the child.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, police learned that the food was prepared by the mother, before she left the child alone in the house and allegedly went to a nearby tavern.

While she was away, the father apparently arrived at the family’s shack, forced his way in and found the child alone.

He then allegedly poisoned the food with the intent to kill the woman.

“However, the mother escaped death as she was away until very late and, therefore, did not eat the supper.

Unfortunately, the innocent child later woke up hungry and apparently ate the poisoned food.

He passed away hours later.

The father was later arrested and charged with murder.

He made his first court appearance on Tuesday, September 15.

The matter was postponed until further notice and the accused was remanded in custody. @FanieFLK
