The Ekurhuleni Metro’s geotechnical practitioners have concluded their investigations into the giant hole at the corner of Main Reef and Wit Deep roads.

Concern about the safety of people living in the immediate vicinity of the hole has finally prompted authorities to take the necessary action.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the investigation has established that the hole is, indeed, an abandoned mine shaft.

For this reason, the matter has been handed over to the Council for Geoscience (CGS), as well as the Department of Mineral Resources.

The area was previously cordoned off, but thieves helped themselves to the fence.

To prevent unnecessary injuries or deaths, the municipality has, however, undertaken to again cordon off the hole with a fence.

“We have no plan in place to protect the fence against potential vandalism,” said Themba. -@FanieFLK
