Confusing ‘turn left’ road sign to be removed

Sanral has admitted that its maintenance teams bungled the road sign at the Rondebult Road-off-ramp on the N17 East.

Road workers had wrongly positioned the sign on the off-ramp, confusing drivers.

The sign at the major off-ramp in Farrar Park points left instead of right – telling drivers to turn left into Rondebult Road if they want to go to Sunward Park Hospital.

The agency has, however, after this publication recently approached it about the problem, promised to fix the problem by today September 11.

“We are aware of this problem. We will remove the incorrect signage – and a new sign will be installed on Friday 11 September 2015

“Usually when a sign gets damaged, the maintenance teams replace it with the exact one that was previously on the road,” said Sanral spokesperson Zenzele Bam.

The botched job by Sanral, at the off-ramp, has left dozens of motorists travelling to Sunward Park Hospital puzzled, and others reportedly lost.

Nonetheless, according to Bam, there is nothing wrong with the sign as such.

“The sign will be moved back on the freeway to indicate that off ramp 136 is for the police station and the hospital.

“We will then install an additional directional board at the traffic light indicating directions to the police station and hospital,” explained Bam.

Robert Aytoun, who is a paramedic and uses the off-ramp regularly, said the confusing road sign, has been directing drivers the wrong way for a very long time.

He has on numerous occasions tried to get Sanral to correct the problem, but to no avail.

Surely someone could have spotted this road sign wasn’t right, because the same road sign on the other side of the freeway (Rondebult Road off-ramp N17 west) is facing the right way, correctly telling drivers to turn left to head down to Sunward Park Hospital.
