Boksburg North SAPS has no record of memorandum – DA

The DA is concerned that nothing has been done since a memorandum outlining the DA’s proposals to tackle drug abuse in the area was handed over to the Boksburg North SAPS.

The memorandum was handed over following an anti-drug march to the station on May 30.

“I was surprised to read a recent response to a written question posed by the DA to the MEC of Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane w,hich states that the Boksburg North Police Station has never received such a memorandum,” said Boksburg East constituency head Janet Semple MPL.

“Apparently, the reply further reveals that the police station has failed to conduct any operations focused on combating drug abuse and trafficking in the area over the past few months.

“This is despite the major increase in drug-related crime in Boksburg North.

“The SAPS is mandated to prevent and combat crime in communities.

“The Boksburg North Police Station’s failure to conduct any drug operations or to act on our memorandum shows that they don’t care about the safety and well-being of residents in the area.”

According to Semple, the DA has repeatedly called on the national government to reintroduce specialised drug units.

“We need dedicated and well-resourced specialised units that can investigate and secure convictions of drug dealers to ensure they are taken off our streets,” she added.

“This is the only way we will tackle the scourge of drugs plaguing our communities.”

According to her, it is also critical that the SAPS investigates and takes action against police officers who are guilty of colluding with drug dealers.

According to Lieut Juanita Coetzer, the Boksburg North SAPS station commander, Col Sam Makama, did receive the memorandum.

“Two Crime Prevention Units, which work only on the drug problem in the Boksburg North precinct, were assembled to tackle crime,” said Coetzer.

“They’re conducting drug busts every day and have already enjoyed successes.” – @IschkeBoksburg
