SANBS urges community to donate blood this September

While you are getting all hyped up about spring, remember that someone out there still needs your blood to survive.

September is the month when South Africans come together to acknowledge the unifying heritage and the many joys of living in a diverse country.

As you put on your traditional gear to mark Heritage Day, on September 24, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) calls on all citizens to celebrate something else we have in common – our nation’s blood.

SANBS and its loyal donors aim to collect 3 000 units of life-saving blood each day, in order to give life to mothers in labour, accident victims, cancer survivors and thousands of others in need blood transfusions.

“It is a remarkable notion that this precious fluid that runs through my veins could be exactly what you might need,” said SANBS communications manager Vanessa Raju.

She explained that even though seasons change during the year, the demand for blood and its various products remains a priority throughout – the blood service must always keep stocks stable.

“Whether you prefer cool drink to a cold beer, roasted butternut to a well grilled boerewors, this Heritage Month helps us to sustain our treasured resource, our nation’s blood supply,” she said.

SANBS encourages South Africans to celebrate their heritage and to join the family of donors dedicated to giving others the gift of life.
