Dachshunds steal hearts at mass ride for East Rand SPCAs

Two eight-year-old dachshunds stole the hearts of many bikers at the fourth annual Ekurhuleni SPCA Mass Ride on Sunday, August 30.

Almond and Obelix, also brother and sister, were comfortably strapped to the chest of their owner, Rob das Neves, in a pet carry bag – not to mention the cute goggles.

Das Neves adopted them in November, last year, as their previous owners immigrated.

He told the Advertiser that Almond and Obelix wanted to go with him on the bike from the very first day.

“They’d jump up all the time, so I had to make a plan if I wanted to take them on the bike with me. Ever since they’ve been very happy,” said Das Neves.

Approximately 1 100 bikers took part in the mass ride from Edenvale to Boksburg.

On the day, there was a total of about 1 300 visitors at the end venue (Boksburg City Stadium).

Motorcycle clubs, fans and families joined in on a fun-filled day in aid of Ekurhuleni’s SPCAs.

Revelers enjoyed a beer tent, food stalls, a flea market, a motorbike raffle, and a park and sell your bike opportunity.

The winner of the SYN CROX 125 scooter, valued at R15 000, was Brenda Ann Evans from Nigel.

According to Ekurhuleni SPCAs regional chairperson, Chris Badenhorst, around 2.5 tons of dry cat and dog food were collected, as well as a variety of tinned food.

Donations were also received from the general public and the bike clubs.

“This was the fourth annual animal run, where the motor biking community get together to support the SPCA,” said Badenhorst.

“The event is slowly growing and this can be seen in the support that we receive every year.

“It is very successful and the SPCA also uses the event to do education.

“The event is also seen as an opportunity for the SPCA to share their challenges with the general public and biking community.” – @IschkeBoksburg
