Why your child should have a balanced diet

Good, wholesome food is always best.

Dr Johan Meyer, from Kip McGrath Boksburg, said that unprocessed cereals, whole-wheat bread, pasta, brown rice, legumes, hormone-free milk and dairy products, large helpings of raw, fresh fruit and vegetables (organic if available), and a moderate intake of  meat, chicken, fish and eggs will assist your child’s concentration and benefit your child’s ability to learn.

“Try and stay away from empty calories such as foods that contain refined sugars and caffeine as well as foods that are preserved and coloured.”

He added that an article in the Cape Argus, dated December 12, 2005, states that processed foods are contributing to an explosion in learning difficulties.

“Eating a balanced diet means eating the right combination of the different food groups each day,” he said.

The basic food groups are:

  • Fruit and vegetables.
  • Grains and cereals.
  • Milk and dairy.
  • Meat, fish and eggs.
  • Fat and oil.
