20 years of pulling no punches in education

St Michael’s Private School, in Boksburg, has, over the years, proven that education doesn’t stop in value, but continues to enlighten with each passing generation.

St Michael’s has been around for quite some time, this year celebrating 20 years of enriching young minds.

Official celebrations were held on August 12, when pupils and teachers showed unity by wearing blue printed T-shirts, with the school’s emblem, donated by the Kaufela Managed Services Group.

The school was originally located in Benoni, in 1994, but a year later relocated to The Village Mall, in Boksburg.

Back then it consisted of 10 classes, three offices and a tuck shop. The school catered for 156 learners, but offered no playground.

In time the school grew and by 2005 there were 16 classes, including a science laboratory and an art class, along with a school hall, media centre, storerooms, staff room and a nurse’s room.

After 20 years the school now also boasts an enlarged and upgraded Grade R classroom.

“One of the great challenges we face is transport; we have pupils who come from various townships, like Vosloorus, Windmill Park and Daveyton,” said Andries Pretorius, the school principal.

“We have a school bus, but it is not enough to get all the pupils to school. We, therefore, need help to improve our transport system, so that more children are educated.

“Education is, after all, the key to success for this country.”

Lindokuhle Maseko, who is the head girl, said she was excited about the school celebrating 20 years, as they receive valuable education.

Refentse Mtshali, a grade 7 learner, said: “The love the teachers have for us is amazing. I love the concerts we stage and also the arts and culture activities at the school.”
