Green light for spectacular yet daring fire stunt

Preparations for this year's most spectacular local vehicle stunt shifted up a gear in Jet Park, on Saturday night (August 1), when daredevil Enrico Schoeman jumped a motorcycle through two walls of fire.

The event, held on the premises of premier sponsor RGC Brokers, served as a test run for a massive stunt later this year, at the 2015 Rhino Motorcycle Rally, in Parys.

Saturday evening also provided a meet-and-greet opportunity for all the sponsors involved.

The big stunt scheduled for the evening of Friday, September 4, will involve two burning caravans, a bike jumping through the inferno, and a car barrel-rolling through the same spot a second later.

“We are well advanced in planning and preparing for the multiple event,” said stunt engineer Harry Henderson, after Saturday evening’s jump.

“The wooden structures through which Enrico jumped on Saturday night are the exact dimensions of the two caravans, and we are happy with the angle and height of our NJR Steel launch ramp.

“On the evening in Parys he should be able to launch through both burning caravans, though he will not be able to see much after hitting the ramp.”

The stunt car – an old Nissan Langley – is currently being fitted with a robust roll cage, a racing seat and full racing seatbelt harness.

Its driver, veteran stuntman André de Kock, should take it for a test drive soon.

“Naturally, we can’t test the stunt car for real, but we will conduct a number of test runs to make sure the timing between the motorcycle and the car is perfect on the night,” Henderson said.

Other exciting happenings at this year’s Rhino Rally will include a visit by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, who will play old rock music on the Saturday, September 5.
