Slain taxi boss faced murder charge

Police records reveal that the murdered Reiger Park taxi boss, Lance Martin, had had a few brushes with the law before his alleged assassination, in Ramaphosa.

Martin, of Reiger Park, was shot on Wednesday evening, August 5, as he sat in one of his taxis, parked at the newly constructed Ramaphosa Taxi Rank.

An unknown assailant emerged from nowhere and fired shots at the driver and another occupant in the taxi.

Both victims were taken to hospital, where Martin died on arrival.

According to police records, he was out on bail, in connection with the Carnival City armed robbery case, at the time of his attack.

The records also reveal that he was previously arrested for a number of criminal offences, including murder, attempted murder and several cash-in-transit heists, in Boksburg.

Other criminal offences include two fraud cases, two carjacking cases, two armed robberies and two cases of theft of motor vehicles.

Detectives are still working to determine the motive for Martin’s slaying.

No arrests have been made so far.

The motive for the attack is still unclear, but it is believed that Martin was shot in revenge for the recent Windmill Park shooting, when another taxi owner, going by the name of Herbert Oliphant, was gunned down.

It was not the first time one of the association’s members had been killed.

In May, last year, the chairperson of the Reiger Park Taxi Association, Andy Khoza, was killed in a shooting believed to have been related to a fight over taxi routes.

Khoza was gunned down just after 8am, while driving with his family along Elsburg Road, between Reiger Park and Ramaphosa.

It all apparently started at the traffic light, at the intersection of Elsburg and Archie roads, where the gunman was apparently waiting for Khoza.

When Khoza arrived at the traffic lights, a gunman pulled out a gun and shot multiple times at his car, according to a police report.

Khoza tried to dodge the bullets and drove away along Elsburg Road, but the gunman pursued him and cornered him about 400m from the traffic lights.

The shooter continued firing wildly at Khoza’s car, and he succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.

Police found 30 bullet cartridges on the crime scene, and the car sustained 32 bullet holes.

More than a year has passed since the gunman killed Khoza, but police aren’t any closer to making an arrest.
