Vosloorus SAPS spokesperson Capt Piet Russow said the officers were doing a normal routine patrol when they were ambushed in the parking lot of the Chris Hani Mall, in Vosloorus.
“We suspect that the men were planning to rob one of the stores in the mall and thought the officers were coming for them – they then opened fire on the officers,” said Russow.
One of the officers was shot in the head and died on the scene.
The remaining officer returned fire and Russow suspects that one of the gunmen was wounded, as he was seen being carried into one of the getaway cars.
The men were driven away in a white Audi A4 and Nissan Lubina.
Police have launched a manhunt.
