No action can be taken: Fury as tiger is kept as a pet

The news that a Boksburg resident is keeping a tiger cub at home has sparked outrage.

The SPCA put pictures of the mentioned tiger on their Facebook page after they responded to a complaint about someone keeping a tiger cub in Boksburg.

The SPCA’s Maggie Mudd said that as tigers are exotic animals and do not occur naturally in South Africa, no permit is required to keep them.

Mudd, however, said that despite the cub currently being in a good condition, the SPCA does not, in any way, support the keeping of any wild animals as pets and firmly believes that they should be left in the wild.

“This cub will grow up to be an extremely powerful predator and will have to be kept caged, which is not a good life for any animal.”

She said people want them to seize it but “they need to realise that there is very little we can’t do – we have no grounds to do so”.

Mudd said they are in communication with the owner to try and ask him to at least take it to a nature reserve or any other organisation where it can run free but still it’s up to him.

The SPCA declined to disclose the exact location where the tiger is kept.
