Fired up to break firewalk world record, change mindsets

Fire Up Africa is a transformational initiative that seeks to create and energise a movement towards teaching, enabling and encouraging people to take charge of their own economy.

This will done by helping Africans to change their own mindsets and create businesses through the power of co-creation.

This is according to firewalking instructor Willem Gous.

One of the means to promote positivity is a firewalk, followed up by a a series of ongoing educational and transformational programmes.

“People need to stop waiting for government to initiate economic change, or their boss to change, or their job to change,” said Gous.

He explained that a firewalk is used as metaphor to help individuals to realise that they can break through whatever is holding them back, to overcome the impossible while breaking through personal barriers and changing mindsets.

“The reality is that most people believe they cannot walk on hot coals at 500 to 600°C, yet, in the right environment, with the right mindset, it is possible,” he added.

“What is holding you back and seems impossible in your life or business? If you can walk on fire, what else is possible in your life?”

To break this cycle of disempowerment and to assist people to take charge of their own economy, Fire Up Africa aims to break the current world record of 608 people, with a 1 000 person firewalk to be held at Emperors Palace, on August 3.

It is widely recognised that South Africa and other African countries need economic change.

According to Gous, a school of thought exists that the wave of xenophobia South Africa recently experienced is the result of people experiencing economic frustration and resorting to blaming other members of society for their struggles.

“The same thinking on jobs, business and entrepreneurship seems to be creating the same result – negative growth and unhappy and disgruntled people; blame, denial and justification,” he said.

Fire Up Africa believes that individuals need to look at problems as opportunities that can create a new financial future for themselves.

“They need other individuals to help them create something bigger, as well as a belief in themselves and those around them,” Gous explained.

“We believe in personal responsibility; we believe in changing the things we have the ability to change and control.

“We believe that it is time to act. We believe that each one of us can make a difference by taking control of our own economy and working with others to help them take control of theirs.

“When each person changes their own economy, we will change the economy.”

The firewalk event is open to all – individuals and businesses.

“If you believe that we live in a great country, on a great continent, a place that has untold opportunity as long as we change, then join the Fire Up Africa movement by joining the firewalk event.”
