Laerskool Baanbreker learner allegedly dies in horror N2 accident

It is believed that a grade six Laerskool Baanbreker learner was among the four people who died when a bus and three cars collided on the N2 Highway between Umtentweni and Hibberdene, on July 13.

The Advertiser cannot name the boy as we have not yet confirmed with the family.

The collision occurred between two sedans, an LDV and a bus on the freeway north of Umtentweni, Port Shepstone at about 1.20pm.

Chris Botha, spokesman for Netcare 911, told the South Coast Herald that paramedics, police officials and other emergency services found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles spread across some 60m of roadway.

Some of the injured were still trapped in the wreckage.

South Coast Herald quoted police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonal Zandra Wiid, saying that it’s alleged that one of the vehicles veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a second vehicle.

This vehicle in turn collided with a third vehicle which then collided with the bus.

She confirmed that a young woman and a boy died, and that two other boys in the same vehicle were injured.

Two women travelling in the second vehicle were also killed, while the male driver was taken to hospital.

The occupant of the LDV was also taken to hospital.

Wiid said that no one travelling in the bus was seriously injured.

A culpable homicide docket will be investigated by Southport police.

Rob Mckenzie, spokesman for KZN EMS said it was a ‘very sad’ scene.

“Four lives lost. Others critical. As paramedics we go and help were we can. Do what we can. Help people where we can. Try to make the tragedy not as bad. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect us. But it’s even worse for others, mothers, children, loved ones lost, all too early.

“We would like to send our condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones today. Words can’t even try to subdue the sadness and loss that they must be feeling.

“We also wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured in today’s crash,” he said.
