Probe into EMPD officer who knocks down, kills child

Knocks down girld (3) while on way to a protest march.

The Ekurhuleni Metro are investigating a case in which one of their officers knocked down and killed a three-year-old child in Vosloorus last month.

The officer, who was apparently speeding to a protest march, swerved to avoid some potholes when he knocked over the young girl.

EMPD spokesperson Kgasago said the matter is being probed by their integrity and standards committee.

“The officer’s driving permit has been suspended until the matter is finalised,” said Kgasago.

However, the officer has neither been arrested nor suspended from work.

Kgasago said in such instances the procedure dictates that they suspend the officers from driving until they appear before a disciplinary hearing.

There is also an external probe by the SAPS, which will inform the EMPD’s internal investigations of its findings.

“We will gather information from the docket as soon as the SAPS have gathered sufficient details and are ready to take the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine the strength of the case,” said Kgasago.

The EMPD will also take a statement from the officer involved before deciding on the matter.
