Cigarettes worth R120 000 stolen in Sunward Park
A gang has stolen R120 000 worth of cigarettes from a delivery kombi in Sunward Park this morning (July 6).
The driver of the kombi told police that he was accosted by a gang of thugs while waiting at the traffic light at the intersection of Uiterkyk and Rondebult roads, Sunward Park.
“A silver Audi stopped next to the kombi, before two armed men got out and jumped into the kombi.
“The robbers forced the driver to drive to Oberon Road, where they forced him to lie on the ground and look away, before they stole 14 boxes full of cartons of cigarettes from the kombi,” said Boksburg SAPS’ Lieut Kwenzakwakhe Ngobese.
“The thugs fled the scene, leaving the kombi and the driver on the scene. The driver was driving alone and did not have security escort.”
The kombi was driving towards Boksburg town. Police suspect that the robbers had been following it before they decided the intersection was a suitable spot to strike.
Lieut Ngobese said no shots were fired and no one was injured.
The suspects remain at large and a case of armed robbery is being investigated.
* This is not the first cigarette delivery vehicle to be ambushed in Boksburg.
On Wednesday, January 21, the Advertiser reported on the robbery of R300 000 worth of cigarettes in Villa Liza.
Also on May 13, police made an arrest on the N17 Highway near Rondebult Road in Boksburg South involving a hijacked truck transporting cigarettes.
Lieut Ngobese said at this stage they cannot conclude whether or not the latest robbery was the work of the same syndicate as in the previous cases.
