ProBono to assist disadvantaged with legal services

After becoming aware of the overwhelming need for legal services among the poor, local legal firms came together to provide resources for pro bono and legal services attorneys to assist low income and disadvantaged clients.

ProBono’s existence is, thus, a response to the lack of access to justice for people in South Africa who are unable to pay for their own private, legal representation.

The organisation is dedicated to increasing access to justice through increased volunteer lawyer participation.

Alice Swanepoel, of local legal firm LVH Attorneys, said they have already set up a clinic at the Kempton Park Magistrates Court and will set up one at the Springs Court on August 1.

“We did set up one at the Boksburg Magistrates Court, but it is not that active,” said Swanepoel.

She added that the services are especially for those earning less than R7 000 a month, but can also accommodate those earning more.

Swanepoel encouraged people to talk to the registrars at different courts to access the services.

Firms taking part in setting up such clinics are Boksburg based LVH Attorneys, Malhebre Rigg and Ranwell, and Tuckers Attorneys, along with Brent Crafford Attorneys (Edenvale), and Kempton Park’s Mike Schaefer Attorneys.
