Impala Park robbery: Suspect linked to two other robberies

The man who was arrested in connection with the Impala Park robbery (Persius Street) yesterday, June 1 is believed to be involved in at least two other housebreakings in the past two days.

Tryna Maritz, Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson, said the man was arrested around 1pm yesterday, June 1 shortly after robbing a home in Impala Park.

The man’s accomplice evaded arrest.

Maritz told the Benoni City Times two Rynfield homes, one in Reid Street and another in Ewing Street were broken into approximately 10 minutes apart on June 30.

The robbers made off with plasma TVs, computers, jewellery and appliances at both the Rynfield properties.

A black Mercedes A180 was spotted at both addresses by neighbours at the time of the crime.

The vehicle’s description was shared on social media after the incidents.

Maritz said the two men are believed to have broken into a house in Impala Park at around 12.50pm.

Saber Tactical received a call about the car’s presence in Impala Park.

They later spotted the car and called for back up. The SAPS’s K-9 unit from Benoni also spotted the same vehicle on the N12, and gave chase.

The driver of the Mercedes A180 took the Putfontein Road exit and was chased into Chief Albert Luthuli Park by Saber Tactical, the Benoni CPF, the EMPD and APB Security.

The Mercedes crashed into a lamp pole and two water meters.

The three suspects then jumped out, and ran away. One of the suspects went into a house, and was found hiding under a bed after the community pointed out to the police the whereabouts of the robber.

Maritz said the Mercedes was stolen in Boksburg North in March.

Police found a plasma TV, a DVD player, heater, speakers and linen in the car.

These items are believed to have been stolen at the Impala Park robbery.

A case of possession of suspected stolen property and stolen vehicle and robbery will be opened with the possibility of other charges to be added.
