Metro to unveil plans for R2.9-billion youth fund

The City Of Ekurhuleni will today (June 29) unveil plans for its R2.9 billion Youth Empowerment Fund at the Ekurhuleni Mayoral Youth Indaba to be held the Lakes Hotel and Conference Centre.

In March, Mayor Mondli Gungubele announced that as of July 1, R2.9 billion of procurement value will be ring-fenced for businesses owned by the youth, women and people with disabilities along with black industrialists, and community job creation initiatives.

At least 1 190 youth-owned business are set to benefit from the programme.

The Mayor will also unveil the roll-out of the Vukuphile Expanded Public Works Programme phase three programme in the City.

According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, in the past three years Ekurhuleni has developed 20 learner contractors in the construction industry through the incubation programme.

“This group has now graduated and each company has implemented projects to the tune of at least R7 million each,” said Gadebe.
