Two men shot dead in suspected revenge attack

An argument among tavern patrons ended horrifically when two of them were shot and killed at the tavern in Joe Slovo informal settlement on Friday night, June 5.

The pair, identified as Bongani Nkiweni (28) and Sidney Hermans (34) were gunned down in what police suspect was a revenge attack.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela, an argument ensued between the deceased and the gunman, who then drew a firearm and fired three shots at the two men.

One of the victims was struck once in the abdomen and the other was hit twice – in the neck and the head. They died instantly.

“Police were alerted to the shooting and reacted swiftly. Our members managed to arrest the gunman’s accomplice, who was found at the scene.

“We are still hunting for the shooter,” said Sgt Phathela.

It is believed that one of the deceased allegedly stabbed the gunman following an argument last month.

Police confirmed that the deceased in question was wanted for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, after he allegedly stabbed the gunman.

“We suspect that he was acting out of revenge for the stabbing, however, no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands.”

The arrested suspect has already made his first court on charge of murder. He was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on June 18.

Anyone who spots the wanted suspect or has information on his whereabouts is asked to immediately contact the investigating officer, WO Detective Bradley Jacobs on 011 916 7000. – @FanieFLK
