Millions lost as fire destroys factory in Boksburg East

A raging fire burnt down a factory belonging to GEFE Pty Ltd at the corner of Brakpan and Van Dyk roads, causing damage believed to be running into millions of rands.

The factory, located in an industrial park, deals in hair related products.

The fire started last night (June 9) at around 8.30pm and burnt throughout the night.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EMS) fire-fighters were still at the scene trying to put out the fire this morning (June 10).

EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said upon arriving at the scene last night, the factory was well alight with the roof already caved in.

“We called for backup as we had to protect other factories within the premises.

“We also had to think fast as there was a diesel tanker inside the burning factory, which we had to remove before it could catch fire,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said five water tankers, four major pumps and three medium pumps were utilised to extinguish the blaze.

“Our efforts were hamstrung by having to shuttle water from a hydrant stationed outside the premises.”

Ntladi said no one was injured in the process and the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.
