Six per cent salary increase for Ekurhuleni ward councillors

Ekurhuleni part-time councillors, who include ward and PR councillors, are currently receiving R416 098 per annum.

This is according to DA Ekurhuleni caucus leader Fortune Mahano, who said all councillors earning less than R1-million have received a six per cent raise, while those who earn more than R1-m have received a five per cent raise.

Mahano said the executive mayor’s salary stands at R1 177 639 per year.

“The Speaker of council now receives R951 083, members of the mayoral committee earn R891 640 and the Section 79 chairpersons R832 197.”

Mahano pointed out that there are other benefits for metro officials, such as a cellphone allowance worth R3 485 for the mayor and R1 739 for part-time (ward) councillors.

“Then there are other benefits, such as a medical aid scheme and pension fund contributions,” he added.

Even though Ward 23’s Clr Andre du Plessis did not state the exact amount of money they receive in terms of a salary, he mentioned that it is not enough.

“We are doing a lot of work for the community and we sometimes put in an extra effort to work at night and over weekends. We should be earning more as part-time councillors,” he said.

“We should be appointed as full-time councillors and thus earn the proper benefits.”

Independent Ratepayers Association of South Africa chairperson Izak Berg confirmed that the above-mentioned salaries are correct.

“The metro is responsible for paying ward councillors,” he said.

“I cannot really say if they are underpaid or overpaid, but what I can say is that all the ward councillors are working hard to provide a service to the community.” – @NalediBoksburg
