Joe Slovo shack fire leaves dozens homeless

One person suffered burn injuries and 30 others, including children, have been left homeless, after a fire destroyed their shacks in the Joe Slovo informal settlement, Reiger Park.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 31, destroyed 13 shacks.

The injured man was admitted to hospital.

The victims lost everything in the devastating fire and are appealing for help to get their lives back on track.

“We are pleading with people to donate household goods, including kitchen utensils, furniture, blankets, clothing, toiletries, stationery, food and other necessities,” said one of the victims, Nokulunga Charlie.

The municipality has already provided the victims with blankets and material to rebuild their homes.

They were also given food parcels, but Charlie (who is a mother of six children), said the food was already finished on Tuesday.

Ward 35 councillor Charlie Crawford arrived at the scene on Sunday and indicated that he has already made arrangements with the disaster management to provide assistance for the affected families.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage, but it is being investigated.

“It’s been tough; we lost all our possessions in the fire, including ID books, school uniforms, food, furniture and clothes,” said Charlie.

The unemployed Charlie said she was alerted by the smoke and warning shouts about the fire, which led her to grab her six children to run for their lives.

To donate goods, contact community leader Esther Lenkoane on 060 360 8584.

Charlie can be reached on her neighbour’s phone, on 076 369 9053.
