METRO’S BUDGET: Ekurhuleni’s revenue totals R29.5-b

The budgeted revenue for the 2015/2016 financial year totals R29.5-billion, compared to R26.6-b in 2014/2015, representing an increase of about 10.9 percent.

This was highlighted by MMC for Finance Clr Moses Makwakwa, during the metro’s budget speech on Thursday, May 28.

In regard to the metro’s medium term revenue expenditure framework, R14.6-b will be used for capital investment.

Of this investment allocation, R2.7-b (an increase from 4.7 to 5.9 per cent) has been allocated for repairs and maintenance.

Makwakwa said an average of 40 per cent of the capital investment programme will be earmarked to upgrade and renew the infrastructure, 30 per cent will go to changing the city’s landscape and address spatial challenges, and a further 30 per cent towards economic development.

Makwakwa said the funds allocated for investment demonstrates the metro’s resolve to improve the level and quality of service delivery, improve infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

The following funds have been allocated according to certain departments:

* Transport – R825-m for transport infrastructure, including repairs and maintenance.

* Roads and Stormwater – R1.2-b will cover, among other things, construction of roads and storm water.

* Energy – R1.4-b to expand, provide sustainable energy and protect the integrity of the network.

* Water and sanitation – a total budget of R1.1-b has been appropriated for upgrading water and sewer networks and maintaining water reticulation infrastructure.

* Human settlement – R579-m for human settlement development and urban renewal.

* Community safety – R123-m

* Sports, recreation, arts and culture – R193-m

* Health and social development – R1-m for the provision of quality health care, early childhood development and promotion of healthy lifestyle.

* Economic development – R67-m towards the relevant infrastructure and a further R82-m towards the promotion and facilitation of economic growth.

* Information and communication technology – a budget of R322-m will be invested into the modernisation of the city, to enable seamless business processes using the right technology and systems. – @NalediBoksburg
