Substance abuse remains a problem in SA

A drug awareness campaign was held at the Ekurhuleni West (EWC) Technical and Vocational Education and Training College (TVET), on Friday, May 15.

The campaign was held by the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), together with the Boksburg SAPS.

It aimed to highlight the substance abuse problem in South Africa, while addressing the the dangers of substance abuse.

Sanca social worker Kgomotso Mnisi addressed the majority of college students and highlighted some of the important factors the youth tend to ignore.

“Many young people start off by experimenting with drugs, but soon find themselves addicted, often later on, to harder substances; drugs are dangerous and they can destroy your entire life,” said Mnisi.

“Addiction is a disease, we need to unite and fight against drugs.”

Sgt Cebisa Masekgo, from the Boksburg Social Crime Prevention Unit, advised the youth to work hand-in-hand with the police to curb drug abuse.

“If you know that a fellow student is selling drugs around the campus, alert us, even if you remain an anonymous caller. ”With your help we can nail these criminals who are destroying the lives of the youth,” she said – @NalediBoksburg
