Fury over government’s decision to roll out condoms to 10-year-olds

A question on whether a government decision to roll out condoms to 10-year-old children is a good idea was labelled as ''rubbish'' by Boksburg residents.

The Advertiser put the question to readers on social media and not a single person agreed to condoms being issued to kids.

Residents’ overall feeling is that children should be playing outside and not entertaining issues of sex.

Here’s what they thought:

Tracey Maartens Erasmus: Government should use these condoms themselves, so that they cannot reproduce their stupidity.

Lynn Ling: This is seriously going too far. I agree with Tracey that they should use these condoms for themselves. This will be telling a 10-year-old child that its OK to have sex. Please bring God back into our schools and our corrupt government.

Ivy Leibach: My 10-year-old brings home a condom and there will be hell to pay. Just because some cannot teach their children morals doesn’t mean the rest of the population doesn’t. Sex education starts at home.

Martie Pieterse: Sickening man, government must rather pull it over their heads and hang their heads in shame. We try to protect our kids and keep sex away from them until we feel they are ready to know what’s it all about, but not the rest of the people. It’s no wonder we have so many kids in orphanages. They throw them away and we bring them up to become decent adults. Keep the condoms to yourself.

Pat Olwage: They are kids, so let them be kids. By giving them condoms is saying go for it – have sex.

Renesh Rajkaran: Government in this country needs prayers. Really! It’s not the UK we live in. Sex education road shows per area would do.

Amelia Ferreira Da Silva: What a strange, strange world we live in. 10-year-old children should be playing. Where does our moral compass begin and end as a society?

Wally Hawkins: This is disgusting. Already there are so many children without fathers and some mothers. Why encourage sex at 10? Do you really think once they are active with sex that they are going to use condoms?

Tertia Schalkwyk: I think it will trigger temptation to start experimenting with sex.

Beverly Botha: Absolutely not a good idea.

Charlotte Fernandes: Not a good idea. Kids should be playing outside and not having sex. They are not emotionally ready for sex at primary school age.

Marie Matthysen: Dit is juis hoekom daar so baie buite egtelike kinders is, want hulle word blootgestel aan dinge wat nie vir hulle bedoel is nie.

Marian Lydon: This is indicative of a government once more telling its citizens what to do, policing people on every level imaginable. Sex education begins at home. Why not educate parents and children in terms of morals and values?

Ronwyn Geere: So glad my child is grown up and I do not plan to have kids. If was 20 years younger, I would immigrate.

Lee-rato Mazibuko Mohale: The message for kids should be to abstain not condom education. What is wrong with this government?

Amanda Zietsman: I think it is sick. When I was 10 years old I was playing outside with my dolls on my grandmother’s porch. They are encouraging sexual activity in children. What a sick country we live in. What’s next? Are they going to offer alcohol to five-year-olds as well? Sick.

Machelle Roberts: Nee dis beslis nie ‘n goeie ding nie die onderwyser wat vir my kind so iets gee sal met my te doen kry.

Marius Cronje: The government is sick. Let 10-year-olds play outside with their friends. Let kids be kids. I mean really what is the world coming to? It’s the government that encourages teenage pregnancies.

Charles North: The government is a joke. Sex education should start at home. Promoting sex education won’t stop this problem, but will just make kids more curious to try things for themselves. They should rather look at the bigger picture.
