Xenophobia voxpox: ‘South Africans are lazy and jealous’

Following the recent xenophobia attacks, the Advertiser approached Boksburg residents to ask if they feel foreigners are a threat to the local job market.

Q A foreign car guard, who wishes to remain anonymous, believes that South Africans are just jealous of the work ethics of foreigners.

“What people are saying about us is not true, we came to South Africa looking for jobs and, for us, it’s our means of survival.

“We buy products in bulk and sell them to other countries, therefore we work smarter. South Africans are just jealous when they say we are taking their jobs without knowing how we managed to get that job.

“We, as foreigners, accept any kind of job. We are not choosy when it comes to the amount money we receive.

“We also spend our money wisely. We don’t drink and we don’t smoke. Our focus is on making money and being able to provide food for our families.

“When we come to South Africa, some of us actually bring capital into the country to boost the economy.”

Q Albert Ndlovu: “I really don’t understand how the government operates by allowing foreign nationals to be employed without proper documentation.

“Honestly, I don’t think the foreigner are taking over our jobs, the problem is with the government and employers.”

Q Nadia van der Berg: “We are all South African, I believe that no one is a foreigner. SA has 11 official languages and I find it strange that they can attack people speaking a different language to them.

“Like Madiba said: ‘For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others’.”

Q Leicester Fortuin: “I don’t believe that foreigners are taking our jobs; most of the businesses run in South Africa are run by foreign nationals, so they are actually creating jobs.

“I’m against people attacking our brothers, who are from our neighbouring countries. These foreigners also just want to make money and support their families.

“South Africans are sadly just lazy and busy making excuses.” – @NalediBoksburg
