Fatal accident on N17 Highway
Three people were killed and many others sustained serious injuries in a taxi accident on the N17 Highway East, just before Rondebult Road, on May 15.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Media, Liaison Officer, William Ntladi said three people were killed and nine others were injured after the minibus taxi in which they were travelling overturned on the N17 freeway west bound between Rondebult and Osborn roads.
“When Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams arrived, they found that the minibus was standing across the eastern bound obstructing three lanes for traffic,” said Ntladi
He said some of the patients were lying across the road whilst and two lifeless bodies lay a couple of meters away from each other.
The third person was also declared dead on scene after the paramedics attempted resuscitation.
The deceased were all males.
Two of the injured were in critical conditions and one other was air-lifted to Chris Hani Baragwaneth hospital for further medical care. The rest of the patients were transported to different hospitals within the City of Ekurhuleni respectively for further medical care.
Apparently the vehicle was travelling west from Springs heading for Johannesburg.
It rolled several times before landing on the N17 East bound.
Ntladi said both directions of the N17 freeway were temporarily closed as a result of this accident untill the photographs were taken for investigation purposes.
Netcare 911 paramedics spokesperson Chris Botha said Netcare 911 paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted frame of the vehicle.
The commuters were ejected from the vehicle as it tumbled down the roadway and was spread over a large area.
After triaging the injured it was found that three people had tragically died before our arrival, three were in a critical condition while six sustained serious injuries.
After medics stabilised the injured at the scene they transported them to various hospitals for the care that they required.
Exact details to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.
