The Boksburg SAPS, assisted by the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit, EMPD K9, SAPS K9 and Department of Education representatives, searched 130 Grade 10s, on Wednesday, May 13.
Officers split into teams to search classrooms during the unannounced raid. Police sniffer dogs were also used.
According to Boksburg SAPS’s Sgt Cebisa Maseko, the move was welcomed by school principal Jan du Plessis, who also recently indicated they support getting rid of all criminal activity, if any, on the premises.
Maseko said the searches will continue unannounced as part of a long-term programme to ensure safety at schools.
“Schools should be centres of teaching and learning, not a place for drugs, dangerous weapons and illicit activities,” she concluded.
Nothing, in terms of drugs or weapons, were found on the school premises.
The raid came a few days after police officers, acting on a tip-off, visited the same school and found a minor in possession of two plastic coin bags full of dagga.
The raid, according to Maseko, was planned before the drug discovery. – @FanieFLK
