Successes for top notch detective

Det Const Nkhangweni Managa has secured several successful convictions, which include five life imprisonment sentences, in a period of six months.

Managa is based at Tsakane Police Station, but serves all the police stations falling within the Brakpan cluster (includingthe Boksburg precincts).

His biggest achievement thus far was the arrest of two taxi drivers who were convicted of rape, attempted rape and possession of stolen goods, in November, last year.

The accused were each sentenced to life imprisonment, plus a further 38 years, for various counts. They were sent to jail for a total of 63 years.

The two were targeting unsuspecting passengers and taking them to secluded areas, where they raped and robbed them of their belongings.

On April 20, this year, Managa secured another conviction, in a rape case that happened in Boksburg North.

The accused, Zimbabwean national Elias Mbenzi, received a life sentence for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Managa investigated another case of rape, that also occurred in Boksburg North, in which a man raped a 14-year-old girl. He was convicted late last year and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Managa also secured a conviction for a rape incident in Tsakane, for which a man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime.

The Venda-born Managa, who has been working for the SAPS since 2007, said he is committed and dedicated to protecting the vulnerable, and to see justice being done.

This serves as an inspiration to leave no stone unturned when carrying out his investigations.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela described Managa as one of the hardest working members in the Brakpan police cluster.

In the past, Managa received an award for effectively investigating a rape case that happened in Reiger Park.

“It is my duty to rid our communities of crime; these convictions serve as motivation to me and my colleagues in the Brakpan police cluster to go beyond the call of duty,” he said.

He hopes the sentences handed down to these accused will send a clear message to like-minded, would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and make sure that they end up where they belong.
