Kim joins finalists in cliffhanger cook-off

Boksburg resident Kim Thomson (40), recently made it to the finals of InstaCook, a cooking competition hosted by Pick n Pay, with her amazing beef and green peppercorn terrine.

An astounding number of entries were received for the competition which ran from mid-January to the end of February.

Entrants were required to whip up a dish using a recipe from the Pick n Pay website or Fresh Living magazine, then style it, snap it and upload it in one of 10 categories on the InstaCook website.

The 50 most popular dishes were determined by a public voting system and, from there, the judges carefully selected the top 20 dishes based on innovation and overall presentation.

The 20 finalists joined the judges in Johannesburg for a thrilling trolley dash and a final cliffhanger cook-off, at the Pick n Pay Good Food Studio, in March.

After a fun-filled event and exciting cook-off, the overall winner was Samantha Setlogelo, for her six layered rainbow cake.

Kim, who was among the 20 finalists, said her favourite dishes include a good braaied steak, salt and pepper calamari, lamb curry and Thai inspired salads.

Kim said that she would like to meet chef John Torode and learn his secrets in the beef department.

“My husband loves beef and any great tips from John would go a long way. I would also love to meet Gordon Ramsay – his passion is heart stopping stuff!

“I would get him to help whip up exciting weekday meals, to save me time in the kitchen, and free up time to help my kids with homework etc.”

Kim said she has always had a passion for food and learnt a lot from both of her grandmothers during school holidays.

“To this day, I love whipping up new dishes and surprising my family.”

Kim added that she would love to own a cooking school, teaching all ages, from kiddies to the older generation.

“I would love the location to be at the seaside with a view of the ocean and have a fresh produce market within walking distance. It would be awesome to teach cooking in a studio with big glass windows overlooking the ocean!”
