R6.3-m worth of drugs seized at O.R Tambo Airport

The war against drugs has taken a positive turn after SARS officials put a major dent in the drug trade in South Africa on Thursday, May 07.

According to SARS’ spokesperson Luther Lebelo, SARS officials uncovered a total of 20.76 kilograms of crystal meth with an estimated street value of R6.3 million at OR Tambo International Airport.

The shipment, profiled by SARS arrived on flight SA061 from Lagos and was said to contain hair pieces and food items.

“Following a thorough inspection by the cargo team, it was established that five parcels of crystal meth was placed at the bottom of the shipment.

“The bust has ensured that crystal meth, with a street value of approximately R6.3 million has been intercepted before it was allowed to enter the market,’ said Lebelo in a statement.

He added that the bust follows a series of successful operations at OR Tambo International Airport this week.

On Wednesday, May 6, SARS Detector Dog Unit officers conducted routine inspections when shipment destined to Madagascar from South Africa was intercepted and detector Dog Archie reacted positively.

The shipment was subsequently inspected and 1 kilogram of heroin valued at R201 087 00 was found concealed in a false compartment of a cartoon box.

A massive 14.4 kilograms of Khat leaves valued at R9604.00 was found in the box.

Meanwhile a Sierra Leone citizen was intercepted on flight SA 223 from Sao Paulo on Tuesday, May 5.
