Woman in coma after ‘lunatic’ hits her with brick on N12

Parkrand resident Darrell Badenhorst was traveling on the N12 from Johannesburg to the East on Thursday afternoon (April 30) when a passenger in his car was hit with a brick.

The incident happened just after the Klipriver on-ramp to the N12 highway, where a foot bridge runs over the highway.

“A lunatic – an idiot unknown man – standing under the bridge on the side of the highway was throwing bricks at cars.

“The brick went through my car’s passenger window and hit the passenger, Marionette Schwab (42), on the side of the head,” said Badenhorst.

He then decided to race with her to the hospital, as he was unable to clear signal to contact police or Sanral to respond to the emergency.

“As I was about to rush towards the hospital, I spotted an ambulance on the side of the road, and pulled over for assistance.
“Paramedics were assisting another passenger who was hit by the same brick-throwing maniac,” he said.

Badenhorst said the other victim, an 8-year-old boy named Caden Slabbert from Benoni, is in ICU and fighting for his life.

“Once Marionette got bandaged up and on a drip on the side of the highway, she was taken to the Trauma Ward at the Union Hospital with an ambulance.”

He said Marionette underwent an operation to close the wound, and went for scans for swelling on the brain.

“She is still in an induced coma, and very critical in ICU, but stable.

“This morning (May 4), I spoke to the surgeon and he said he was satisfied with her progress.

“If Marionette stays as stable till tomorrow (May 5), they will attempt to bring her out of the coma and remove life support.

“This will be followed by more scans being done,” said Badenhorst.
