Gym instructor wanted for old age home

Cosmos Old Age Home is desperately seeking a volunteer who can present gym classes, twice a week, in the mornings.

The home has approximately 15 residents who attend the gym.

According to social worker Karin Meyer, it is widely recognised that regular physical activity is associated with reduced risk for several chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and depression.

“Physical activity is therefore an important component of health for all individuals,” said Meyer.

“However, in older persons, physical activity is important for maintaining functional independence and mobility and physical activity will slow the loss of tissue.

“Physical activity improves the psychological functioning of older persons, including self-efficiency and reduction of depression.

“Recreational activities improves socialisation, alleviates depression, increases the sense of wellbeing and it improves life satisfaction.”

Meyer said Cosmos is also in need of gym equipment, since the current equipment is very old and not user friendly to the residents. – @IschkeBoksburg
