State opposes bail in ex-Bafana player case

A former Bafana Bafana player and his two co-accused appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates Court for bail application on April 28.

The case was postponed to May 11, for the ruling on the bail application.

The former player was arrested in Witfield along with nine other people for being in possession of a signal jamming device and planning to hijack a truck transporting cigarettes, earlier this month.

One of his co accused was found wearing a metro police uniform.

The other seven people have since been released because there was no evidence linking them to the case.

The state made its intention clear that it opposes bail, reasoning that the suspects are facing serious charges, which includes impersonating a police officer, intention to commit robbery and possession of a signal jamming device.

The state also argued that the former Bafana player is a flight risk and that the home address he provided could not be confirmed as there is always no one at the house.

The defense argued that officers had sufficient time to confirm the address and so it cannot not be the former player’s fault.

The defense further argued that their clients deserve bail and that the case should be treated just like any other case and not so the called “high profile case”.
