Residents praise SAPS for tackling crime in Sunward Park

For the past couple of years, there has been zero crime in Lotus Village, a usually quiet residential neighbourhood in Sunward Park.

Residents of Lotus Village, including Cyril Theunissen, said they are grateful to the Boksburg police officers who dedicate so much time and energy to combating crime, in particular house break-ins.

Theunissen explained that thugs had terrorised the community over a long period, and that he and his family have, in the past, been victims of crime.

He said house burglaries spiked in the neighbourhood, often occurring at night while residents were out for just a few hours, or at work.

“I know a team of dedicated police officers were recently deployed to deal with the crime spree, resulting in multiple arrests of suspects and the recovery of stolen goods in the Sunward Park area,” he said.

“The good news is that, because of these officers, who have gone an extra mile in fighting crime, the rate of burglaries has plummeted.

“Although we are still concerned about the level of crime in Boksburg as a whole, Lotus Village now has a low crime rate and we feel safer and secure in our homes and on the streets, thanks to the hard work of these members (Sgt S. Munsamy and SG J.  Samuel, Sgt Z.P. Johnson and Const D. Fernandes)  and their station commander, Col Biggs Govender.

“We need more officers like them to protect our lives and properties against criminals.”

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, apart from the regular patrols, the station assigns an additional team of officers to carry out crime prevention activities in the areas most affected by crime, including Sunward Park and Freeway Park.

Activities include constantly checking on the residents to make sure that they are safe, intensified security checks and day and night patrols.

Lotus village residents have united and stared a virtual neighbourhood watch, using cameras and sending out detailed alerts about any suspicious cars or people, and the movements of strangers throughout the area.

Theunissen would like to commend the Lotus village residents for uniting and combating crime as a whole and for bringing crime down to zero making the residential area safe for everybody to be proud of.
